Hello again folks,
I am happy to say this is probably one of my proudest blog yet. I recently had the opportunity to sit with Wreck Your Head Media President Kevin Wilson. I had the chance to really get into the head of the man that make this company happen. Without any further interruption, I give you the man of the hour...
WYHMedia Insider:
"Let me just start by saying this is an absolute honor for me. My first question would probably be the most obvious, how did this company come about?"
Kevin Wilson:
"And that is a great first question. Well there was never a doubt in my mind that I wanted to own a production company, and I never thought it would be in the fetish film industry. Films, Television, were my life. To this day I can still sit and watch hours of TV, unfortunately my work schedule doesn't grant that leisure.
There is a bit of a story behind how I got to this point. I guess I would have to say my start came from a commercial BDSM dungeon house that took a chance and hired me to edit videos for them. After I parted ways with them I took a regular job that was very slow work wise. I was watching some fetish videos out there, and noticed how bland, and boring most of them work. I called up a friend, and said I want to make movies better then this crap. Two weeks later we had a business license, and were approaching women to shoot with us."
WYHMedia Insider:
"Wow two weeks is fast! After that I bet it was smooth sailing from there."
Kevin Wilson:
"Actually it was probably the worst mistake I made. I rushed to get into the business with almost no startup money. I was able to swing some deals and get some women to shoot with us for content. Had I really sat and thought about things rather then run straight into the fire, I would have probably had less heartache then I did."
WYHMedia Insider:
"I didn't realize that there was heartache in the beginning. Do you mind telling about that?"
Kevin Wilson:
"Well my partner and I were both working regular jobs at the time so we were able to put our personal finances together to keep the company afloat. We were doing okay. I had booked a trip to FetishCon '07 and had the time of my life. At this point my partner had lost his job, and 24 hours after returning from the con, I lost my job. It wasn't because of the trip. My boss was unable to keep me employed anymore. It was a major blow to us (my partner and I). We managed to keep things going for like another three months. My partner was having personal issues, and asked to leave the company. We parted ways in a very friendly manner. He's still a good friend, and still helps out the company from time to time.
I went back to trying to find regular work, and was having the hardest time. I decided to put my talents to use and put the company on hold. I began doing editing, and filming for other companies. That proved to be a big big help."
WYHMedia Insider:
"That's an inspiring story. You seem to never want to give up."
Kevin Wilson:
"I never wanted to. I just couldn't afford to run it. I was doing work for other people while Wreck Your Head Media was slowly drifting away. My fear was that people would say 'Wreck Who?' I knew I wouldn't let it go. However I needed to make ends meet. It was probably the best decision to do freelance work."
WYHMedia Insider:
"What made you put WYHMedia as your made focus again?"
Kevin Wilson:
"New York was hit with a string of police raids on commercial BDSM dungeons. I knew many prominent Dommes in the area who were nervous about their future. Some went stayed away from the BDSM scene, while others outright quit. It was a very scary time. I decided it was time to try to maybe help some of these women. So I began send out emails and offer content exchange or whatever I could think of. I just wanted to get them some content to put out there and make money. It actually helped me realize the promotional route I wanted to go.
My efforts didn't go unnoticed, and it landed me several other editing jobs, but no one was doing anything for free. I learned that very quickly, and I understood. These women no longer had a place to play in, they had no security. The raids were a huge blow to the NYC BDSM community moral. Parties were few and far between. It was just a bad time to try to get back into the business."
WYHMedia Insider:
"You mention your promotional route. What is that all about?"
Kevin Wilson:
"I'm glad you asked. Promotion is so key to succeeding in this business. You may have noticed that I promote several other companies, like
SheFights.net, and
Clubdom. The reason I do this is because I want to build a network of companies who can, and are willing to help each other. Let's face it, these are rough economic times. To be in any business only for yourself is pretty selfish. I always pride myself on my caring nature. I want to help people. If they are willing to help me, why not return the favor. Lady Cheyenne of Clubdom, has been a huge help to me, so throwing an link, or banner on our
clips store is the least I can do.
There have been several people who have been in this business only for themselves. Those people are either struggling, or are no longer around. Its just not the way to run a business."
WYHMedia:
"Care to mention any names of those people?"
Kevin Wilson:
"That's not my style. I don't blacklist anyone. What good would come of that? My hope is that those who have done shady business, or are underhanded will grow, and learn not to be that way, and when they do, I will be more then happy to have them join my promotional network."
WYHMedia:
"You have a very active part in this company. Why not just sit back and let others do the work?"
Kevin Wilson:
"Ha! I really should those 16-17 hour days are killing me, and my hairline! In all seriousness I'm too much of a creative person to let others do the job right. I'm always trying to find ways to improve whether its editing, lighting, sound, whatever. There is always room for improvement.
That was one of the reasons my partner left the company. I wanted to continue doing the editing myself, and he felt he couldn't be as helpful to the company as he wanted. As far as shooting goes, I usually film because there are several people I would trust to do it the way I like. I'm a horrible perfectionist haha!"
WYHMedia Insider:
"What are some future plans for this great company?"
Kevin Wilson:
"There are several ideas floating around in my head. I have some ideas for full features in mind. I'd like to maybe see a new website within the next coming months, but no official plans for it yet. It looks like their might be some collaborations with Shefights in the next month, again nothing is set in stone. When things become official you will be the first person to know about it."
WYHMedia Insider:
"Excellent I look forward to it. One more question before you get back to your busy schedule. Is there anything you'd like to say to our fans?"
Kevin Wilson:
"I would like to say thank you! Thank you for your continued support. Each and every one of your plays an important role in keeping this company alive. I also want to take this opportunity to thank EVERY one of our models, past, and present. Without your participation this company would have faded away, and for that I am eternally grateful for."
WYHMedia:
"What a great way to end this interview. Thank you for taking this time to chat with me!"
Kevin Wilson:
"Thank you for inviting me. It was a lot of fun."
There you have it folks. I was shocked when Kevin agreed to do this interview. I didn't think I stood a chance in hell at getting him to do this. I am thankful that he did. I hope you all enjoyed it too. I am trying to set up some more interviews. Hopefully Kevin likes this interview and approves me for more hehe. Well for now folks, I will bid you adue.
Yours truly,
The Wreck Your Head Media Insider
